Assisted living promotes independence, purpose and dignity for each resident and encourages the involvement of a resident’s family and friends. Compared to other long-term care providers like skilled nursing facilities or in-home care, assisted living offers lower costs, improved quality of life, better health outcomes, and reduced health care costs. However, such care can be expensive.
Unfortunately, many Americans are not financially prepared for their long-term care needs. Many believe incorrectly that Medicare, Medicaid, or their private health insurance will cover long-term care costs. Policymakers must seriously address this emerging crisis and pursue public policies to increase access to, and improve the affordability of, senior living options.
This report outlines policy recommendations that represent meaningful steps that can be taken now to help make senior living more affordable and accessible.
